The Yak Ru, scheduled to be held from April 1 to April 13, 2017, is a mountain biking race in Annapurna Circuit, one of the most frequented destination for trekkers throughout the world. This is the fifth year of the Yak Ru race. A participation of top national riders in 2016 in the race hints its growing popularity and also signals a wider and challenging participation in the 2017 race.
This tough challenge of mountain biking at high altitude has been segmented into 5 stages with categories separated for men and women. The race commences from Besi Sahar, Lamjung and ends at Kagbeni, Mustang, in the Annapurna Circuit covering a total distance of 240 km. The route reaches its highest altitude of 5,416 m at Thorong La pass. The 5 stages of the race have been well planned with a rest day allocated in the middle of the race at a high-altitude location to allow the racers better acclimatisation.
To boost the fun of this race, two more days of group ride has also been scheduled after the competition ends in the vicinity of the Mustang Valley.
Due to the challenge of the terrain and the high altitude through which the trail passes, the riders of Yak RU need to prepare well both physically and mentally to take part in the competition. The area could also see sudden extreme cold weather, snow, rain, heat and dust, which requires riders to set off with proper gear and strategy.
